Particulate matter emission reduction in small- and medium-scale biomass boilers equipped with flue gas condensers: Field measurements

Flue Gas Condensers (FGC) are used to increase the thermal output of biomass boilers. This reduces emissions per unit produced energy but furthermore, fine dust particles will be collected in condenser. These condensers therefore have a double effect on specific particulate matter emissions. In addition mechanisms that cause particle capture such as thermophoresis and diffusiophoresis, other agglomeration or condensation growth also influence size emitted particles. Due combination these mechanisms, efficiency depends size. A range presenting lower efficiency, called penetration window, is generally observed. Measurements 5 MWth boiler showed this window 0.07–0.49 μm where reduced by around 20%. an 18 kWth 0.04–0.49 can even negative window. For medium-scale boiler, condenser overall 64% number 62% mass m3, 70% 69% MJ. small-scale 4% 50% 14% 55%
